           Pointers in Writing for International Journals An Associate Editors Personal Perspectives

Abstract:

This is not a traditional presentation on how to write a paper, but the speaker will present his personal perspectives on aspects that academics, students and researchers might find helpful when writing manuscripts for International Journals published in English. The perspectives presented are based on personal observations and experience in serving the International Journal of Impact Engineering as an Editorial Board member (1999-2007) and an Associate Editor (2008-present), as well as his own philosophy of helping graduate students and senior undergraduates communicate well in terms of both written and oral presentations. Examples of actual comments from journal reviewers will be shown to illustrate the points presented. (If time permits after the presentation, comments on webpage descriptions and amendments of manuscript Abstracts drafted by students, will be done to demonstrate practical application of the seminar content.)

Brief CV:

Victor Shim is an Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and recently joined Ningbo University as a Professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics. His research interests include dynamic material behaviour, cellular materials, 3D-printed micro-lattices, and impact on high-strength fabrics and protective structures. He established the Impact Mechanics Laboratory at NUS and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Impact Engineering and an Editorial Board Member of Defence Technology. He pursued his Bachelors degree at the University of Auckland, via a scholarship from the New Zealand government, then returned to Singapore to fulfil three years of military service as an artillery officer. Thereafter, he worked at NUS as a Senior Tutor while pursuing his Masters degree. He then proceeded to Cambridge University on an NUS scholarship for his PhD in Impact Mechanics, and returned to NUS to continue his academic career. He has been a Visiting Scientist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and a Visiting Scholar at UC San Diego. He has received awards for Teaching Excellence, Innovative Teaching, and Outstanding Service. He has also served in various senior university administration appointments at NUS (the last being Associate Vice-President for Global Relations), and as a Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and a Deputy Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
