摘要:
Kinetic matter-any material system capable of movement and deformation-represents a major frontier in materials science. By embedding autonomy enabled bythe synergistic coupling between mechanics and electrohnics, autonomous kineticmatter eliminates complex hardware architectures, offering more efficient, robust, andscalable solutions for soft robotics and adaptive structures. This talk explores howgeometry, instability, and physical learning can be harnessed to design these intelligentsystems. First, we introduce a geometric design framework based on the discretetransformation method to achieve desired displacement fields invariant to configurationremapping. Second, we demonstrate how material-level instabilities can be channeled,showcasing a self-oscillating wire enabled by asymmetric Willis viscosity, that can alsointeract with a string network to realize various wave modes. Finally, we present twotypes of physical learning machines that utilize contrastive learning to achieve targetedstiffness tensors and vibration modes, paving the way for materials that adaptively thinkthrough their own physics.
主讲人简介:
Dr. Yangyang Chen is an Assistant Professor in Department of Mechanical andAerospace Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST). Dr. Chen's research focuses on design and understanding of "engineeredliving materials" to interact with the environment in a more efficient, functional, andsustainable way by leveraging combined knowledge of solid mechanics, mathematics,information theoretics, and materials science. He received his Ph.D. degree inMechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Missouri and earned hismaster's and bachelor's degrees from Ningbo University. Before joining HKUST, hewas a Postdoctoral Fellow and then a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri.
